Master Class: User-Centered Design (UCD)

Are you involved in the design of user interfaces? And do you want to shape an engaging, productive and safe experience for the people using your products or services? Then you need to master a broad set of methods and techniques in User-Centered Design (UCD). Practical advice and feedback from experienced UCD professionals also help.

On Wed. 23 and Thu. 24 September, Namahn runs a next UCD master class. Led by Tom Stevens and featuring contributions from Mieke Daniels, Koen Peters, Joannes Vandermeulen and Johan Van Maldeghem, this highly practical master class challenges the know-how of a small group of participants and teach them how to apply UCD techniques the Namahn way. Intensive, hands-on and intimate, the master class takes place in our library and design studio in central Brussels.

The program for the UCD master class looks as follows:

Day 1 - AM

• Introduction of the participants
• Why user-centered design?
• Introduction to the UCD discipline and process
• Field studies
• Personas
• Design requirements and constraints

Day 1 - PM

• Mental models
• Scenarios of use
• Navigation scheme

Day 2 - AM

• Conceptual design
• Mock-ups

Day 2 - PM

• Visual design
• Usability testing
• Design specification
• Aligning UCD with software engineering
• Discussion and wrap-up

For most of these items, an introduction to theory is followed by a group exercise and the discussion of results.

Participating in the master class will help you:

• Set up an integrated UCD process
• Select and apply appropriate design methods and techniques
• Analyse and understand the context of use
• Specify requirements
• Design user interfaces from concept to detail
• Assess the usability of digital products
• Make a strong case for UCD

The master class is conducted in English.

Registration
Participation fee: 1.400 euro (excluding VAT) - each additional participant from the same company qualifies for a 10% rebate on the participation fee. Please register by sending mail to masterclassUCD@namahn.com.

Target audience
We will accept participants with a basic understanding of UCD and usability engineering (business and functional analysts, software developers, user interface designers, technical writers, IT project managers, usability engineers, product managers, marketing directors, R&D staff ...).
